Cells in our body function in conditions and environments that are physically diverse. In these different microscopic niches, cells are in “mechanical balance” with their surroundings. This mechanical balance is disturbed in many pathological conditions, like in cancer and during wound healing. However, the details of how cellular mechanics influence these processes and the involved cellular components are poorly characterized.
This interdisciplinary proposal focuses on the complex mechanisms and effects of forces experienced and transmitted by the cells.
With this research we expect to reveal the detailed mechanisms of the intricate interplay between cells and their surroundings. This is crucial for the development of novel drugs/biomaterials and for the better understanding of many diseases which involve cellular mechanics.
