The VALDA project investigates globally salient citizen welfare problems of infertility and dementia in the technologically advanced society of Finland. The project is innovative and timely because it explores and compares the phenomena of reproduction and aging within the frontline theoretical framework of valuation studies.
Using ethnographic and text analysis methods, we study how a) experts in biomedicine and legislation and b) patients and their peer support communities order, manage and valuate infertility and dementia.
The project contributes to cutting-edge scholarship on moral sociology and valuation as human practice, and to empirical scholarship on the co-production of expert and lay knowledge. The societal impacts of the project include novel insight on citizens' welfare in the early and the last phases of life course. We aim to facilitate the development of more equal and ethical ways to manage infertility and dementia. See http://blogs.helsinki.fi/meskus.
