Project description
Surgical treatment for prevention of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) requires early diagnosis of cartilage injuries. To enable this we introduce a triple contrast delayed contrast enhanced computed tomography technique based on simultaneous use of three contrast agents: Nanoparticles being too large to enter cartilage, cationic iodine agent being sensitive to proteoglycans and non-ionic gadolinium agent being sensitive to permeability and water content. Nanoparticles ensure perfect contrast between synovial fluid and cartilage. Normalizing partition of cationic agent with that of non-ionic agent enables determining cartilage proteoglycan and water contents. Simultaneous quantification of iodine and gadolinium agents is possible by using dual energy tomography. The method helps detecting and timely repair of lesions that could lead to PTOA. Reaching the goals is facilitated by researcher exchange with UCSF, Boston University, University of Cambridge and Utrecht University.
