Chronic diseases are major burden of disease in Finland. Many of the chronic diseases share same risk factors such as obesity, hypertention, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, alcohol use, physical inactivity and unhealthy diet. All these risk factors are modifiable by lifestyle changes.
The PoDDy-HePo project will provide up-to-date and reliable estimates about the prevalence of major chronic disease risk factor, burden of the diseases, and projections on these in the Finnish population.
This type of results on the disease and disability burden and their potential developments in the future can be used by policy makers and other stakeholders to reduce health inequalities in Finland and economic burden of chronic diseases through the reduction of disease incidence and prevalence by better primary prevention activities.
