Project description
The project studies the role of cultural diplomacy within the Soviet political leadership by focusing on the hosting of mega-events in the 1960s-80s. As recent scholarship has shown, besides arms race and economic competition the Cold War was a battle on cultural supremacy. This study analyses how Soviet political leadership thought about cultural diplomacy in the context of systemic competition. Why the USSR considered and discussed hosting mega-events, such as the Olympic Games and the Expos, what were the expected benefits and how much resources they were willing to invest in organising these events? The political thinking on the hosting of mega-events illuminates the Soviet relation to cultural globalization and the Western cultural heritage during the Cold War. The history of cultural diplomacy in the USSR provides us tools for understanding the Soviet legacies in contemporary Russian cultural diplomacy and puts the recent Russian mega-event boom into a broader historical context.
