Project description
This project exposes and unmasks how politicians in democracies around the world disguise morality when making policies. Modern policymakers tend to justify or oppose policies by relying on rationalized arguments based on seemingly objective facts and the force of pure logic. In the process they hide their moral assumptions and present a technical view of politics. This project will build a comprehensive theory to explain how this is done in our age of globalization, and what are the impacts of this moral masking. It will qualitatively analyze parliamentary discussions from six countries on four continents over the past 20 years. The research will zoom in on debates related to counter-terrorism, macroeconomics, and asylum-seeking refugees. In addition to providing new insights on these topical issues, the project will contribute to the study of global governance by including the neglected moral dimension of politics across the world.
