Project description
Several examples from Europe’s recent history demonstrate the power of the past in intergroup conflicts. This research explores the ways history is narrated and used in media, politics and education. First, it aims to explore the ways the story of the nation is told and those stories that are silenced in Finnish media. Second, it analyses how politicians who belong to different parties use history when they participate in the debate on contemporary “refugee crisis”. Third, this research will explore the ways the story of European unification is told in textbooks of nine different European countries. The idea of European integration is put to its greatest test in the times economic and refugee crises hitting Europe. In order to improve mutual understanding between nations and people, it is important to analyse how the stories of the various European countries about their own nation, about Europe and about "the other" (e.g., refugee) are told by means of history.
