Project description
The predictive power of ecological models depends on how well they capture key biological processes. For predicting future demographic changes in natural populations, it is crucial to characterize how environmental disturbances lead to phenotypic and genetic changes in traits affecting fitness. Unfortunately, detailed historical information on genetics, phenotypic variation and demography is limited, which impedes the application of ecological and evolutionary theory to real life cases, such as predicting the effects of climate change on populations of conservation concern or management importance. The scale archive for the Teno River stock that dates back to the 1970s provides me with the genetic and phenotypic information to build a strong baseline to estimate key parameters of the eco-evolutionary model. The results of the predictive model will be applicable to many salmon populations worldwide. In addition, the modelling framework can be adapted to other species.
