Project description
Overfishing has lead to substantial declines of fish stocks worldwide, thus threatening future fisheries catches and the entire persistence of fished stocks. Overfishing has partly resulted from the lack of political will to reduce fishing pressure but also from a lack of knowledge about biological features affecting the renewal ability of fished populations. The present project looks into the biological mechanisms of fish stock dynamics and develops practical tools to more realistically predict fish stock development in the future and how it might be affected by possible changes in individual fish. The project is based on mathematical and statistical modeling tools and looks into fish stock dynamics from the perspective of both a single species and from an entire marine ecosystem. Specific study systems will be cod in Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada, and in Skagerrak, Norway, as well as Baltic herring. The ecosystem investigations will focus on the South Australian Ocean ecosystem.
