This project, MIRLIGHT for short, is concerned with the demonstration of a new, programmable light source for mid-infrared (33.5 m) wavelength range, where most environmental gases and volatile organic compounds, such as toluene, benzene, and naphthalene, have strong absorption peaks. The cost-effective, compact light source consists of Si-photonic circuit filter and GaSb-based laser diode. The source will enable fabrication of affordable multiband gas sensors with good selectivity and sensitivity for indoor air quality monitoring, greenhouse gas detection, food inspection, waste treatment, chemical lab analysis, and many others. The market impact is expected to be disruptive, since currently such kind of light source is not commercially available.
