Beskrivning av projektet
In this project, we tested whether a novel computer game developed at the University of Helsinki would alleviate the symptoms of subjects suffering from major depressive disorder. The game experiment was carried out in collaboration with HUS Mentalhub that is part of national mental health IT infrastructure. In the experiment, the subjects played the game for eight weeks and a subset of them participated to a magnetoencephalography (MEG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain imaging before and after the intervention. The results showed that the intervention was successful in alleviating depression symptoms. In the brain imaging experiment, we identified a novel form of cortical network dysdynamics that was predictive of individual symptom severity. These findings advance the understanding of the systems-level mechanisms underlying depression. Moreover, this project opens new avenues for developing easily accessible and non-pharmacological treatment for major depressive disorder.
