GreenCNC project has been successful in boosting the Finnish technical competence in the field of cellulose nanocrystal production. A laboratory scale reactor working with hydrgen chloride gas has been built and it can be used for the necessary pre-treatment step in preparing the nanocrystals. This is a significant improvement to the state-of-the-art global technology which now utilizes liquid sulphuric acid for nanocrystal production. Hydrogen chloride gas is easier to recycle and the nanocrystals can be purified without virtually using any water or energy, which is in stark contrast to the current technology with sulphuric acid. A concept report written towards the end of the project has stated that upscaling of the technique is feasible.
