Microwaves are an invisible form of light that we use every day to transmit important information through the air. We text our friends, surf the web on mobile devices, or get directions with GPS; all of these activities rely on microwaves. In a recent Academy of Finland project, we pushed microwave technology to its quantum physics limit by building a detector sensitive enough to see signals containing only a few hundred microwave photons. We utilize this advance to find revolutionizing new applications that will kickstart new high-tech growth. The first pilot project builds a super-sensitive “microwave spectrum analyzer” that will help calibrate cryogenic refrigerators that are an advanced export from Finland. Other fascinating possibilities include pointing the detector into the sky to search for microwave signals in our universe. More importantly, the devices we develop may also extend the range of new search-and-rescue tools that pick up biometric signals from people in distress.
