We studied superconducting kinetic inductance magnetometer, initially developed at VTT for measuring tiny magnetic fields, and its utilization. Among potential applications, biomagnetic measurements produce information from human heart and brain, and geomagnetic measurements are utilized in mineral searches. We measured the perfromance of the sensor, and found it sufficient, for example, in magnetocardiographic measurements. With superconducting sensors one challenge is the cooling needed due to a low operating temperature. Thus, we also addressed a version of the sensor which is based on high-temperature superconducting materials. In connection to this, we built a miniaturized cooling system capable of reaching the required temperature below -200 degrees Centigrade, and developed readout electronics for the sensor. Furthermore, we analyzed competing technologies, and discussed with the representatives of the geomagnetic and biomagnetic communities about the requirements.
