Climate change and growing food demand are global challenges to be solved in an environmentally sustainable manner. Plant biomass is an essential source of nutrition but also renewable energy. Forest trees may be used for production of renewable energy such as biodiesel simultaneously releasing field area for food and feed cultivation. Molecular breeding has improved quantity and quality of field crops, but it is seldom applied to trees. Tree biomass is mostly resulting from the activity of a lateral growth meristem called cambium. Using model species Arabidopsis thaliana as a tool, we have discovered genes regulating cambium function. In this study we took advantage of these research results to increase the biomass and wood production of trees such as poplar and silver birch. Our initial results are very promising and we believe they will help the cost-effective application of wood biomass in achieving sustainable future.
