For rotating systems efficiency can only be improved with higher rotational speeds and lower friction. The low friction, oil-free operation and precise position control can only be achieved by magnetic levitation. The classical active magnetic bearings have high cost and system complexity. An alternative technology is a bearingless motor. The bearingless motor uses the same stator for torque generation and levitation control. Similarly, to rotating machines the magnetic levitation functionality can be added to the linear machines. Introducing linear bearingless motor for motion control would create a new market for new kinds of motion control systems. This project aims to develop bearingless motor technology solutions, which are valid for both rotating machinery and linear motion control applications. Further objective is to find both technologically and commercially promising application fields, where first industrial pilots of bearingless motor technology can be applied.
