Understanding how plants detect signals in light quality opens up the possibility to direct their physiology and growth in plant production environments by manipulating the spectral composition of light. Light conditions can be optimised to suit specific horticultural purposes with potentially huge economic benefits to growers, improving energy efficiency, food quality and yield. The simplest way to achieve this is by adjusting the properties of cladding materials that filter sunlight to affect spectral quality in the production environment. We have made precise on-site irradiance measurements, matching greenhouse materials with structural data in a range of controlled environments. These data feed into models of the light conditions, providing digestible knowledge to inform decisions of growers. The close links we have established with end-users through professional bodies and presentations at industry events has led to direct transfer of our research to plant production environments.
