We investigated neural risk factors for weight gain. Participants were young men with high versus low familial and behavioural risk for weight gain. Their neurotransmission (opioid and endocannabinoid receptors) and cerebral glucose utilization was measured with positron emission tomography. Body fat and internal organ composition was measured with magnetic resonance imaging and BodPod pletysmography. Physical fitness and activity was measured with extensive fitness tests and mobile tracking of physical activity. Participantsí weigh and body composition was tracked annually after completion of the measurements. The results provided new biomarkers and psychologican and behavioural risk factors for weight gain. We found that particularly the opioidergic neurotransmission was associated with weight gain risk. Accordingly, unobtrusive measurements of the brain's opioid tone would provide a powerful tool for screening individuals with high obesity risk.
