Meteorological conditions in Antarctica are strongly coupled with the underlying snow, but the processes involved are currently not well understood and modelled. The main objectives of ASPIRE are to obtain better knowledge on physical processes of Antarctic snow, atmospheric boundary layer, clouds, as well as atmospheric dynamics and transports, and further, to apply this knowledge to improve satellite remote sensing algorithms for snow properties and, above all, to improve weather and climate predictions. The objectives will be reached by applying the best existing observations, numerical models and reanalyses, as well as by making new observations with novel technology in the region of the Finnish station Aboa. ASPIRE will be carried out in extensive international collaboration. ASPIRE will yield benefits for the society, among others via improved safety and significant cost savings, and the results will also be valuable for Northern Hemisphere weather and climate prediction.
