Field data are necessary in forest inventories even though digital remote sensing is utilized increasingly. A possibility to improve cost-efficiency of the expensive field measurements is to adjust them for spatial structure of forests. A key goal was to investigate how the spatial structure of a forest stand affects the accuracy and costs of plot-level forest resource estimation. The second goal was to improve methods for predicting the spatial structure from remote sensing. Results obtained by spatial statistical methods can be utilized to construct more cost-efficient or more accurate and precise field assessment of forests. Detecting spatial structure of forest from remote sensing can also be used to assess the need of possible silvicultural treatments in the future.
