The project is related to the interaction of magnetic fields and mechanical stresses in ferromagnetic materials. The magneto-mechanical interaction allows capturing waste energy from mechanical vibration and using it for powering batteryless and wireless devices. On the other hand, the same effect reduces the energy efficiency of electrical machines.
We will develop an open-source environment for numerically modeling the coupled magneto-mechanical effects. Availability of reliable modeling tools allows increasing the energy efficiency of electrical machines and enhances the design of energy harvesting devices. We will also build and measure a prototype magneto-elastic energy harvesting device. The data and results will be published as a benchmark problem, against which other magneto-mechanical models can be validated.
