Bringing a new drug to the market is a long and complex process. To reduce the cost and improve the success rate of drug candidates, understanding of the drug pathways in the human body is crucial before starting full human trials. Radiocarbon labelling is often used in this context, as it allows following the drug in the body during the preclinical trials, thus improving the chance of success of the drug. Current methods to detect radiocarbon either lack sensitivity or on-line measurement capabilities. In an already funded academy project, a novel instrument for radiocarbon detection based on laser spectroscopy is currently under development. The aim of this new project is to apply this work to a new type of application, related to biomedicine. Small doses of radiolabelled drugs will be injected in animals and the collected biological samples subsequently analysed using our instrument, and for the first time, radiocarbon will be detected in biological samples using laser spectroscopy.
