Antibodies are essential tools for research, diagnostics and therapy. However, we need a faster and more cost-effective method to generate them, especially when moving closer to personalized medicine. We have devised an antibody-generating technology, which has potential to individualize drug generation. Our new synthetic biology approach converts an existing complex and laborious technology into a simple and ubiquitous process that does not require special equipment or knowledge and avoids all human intervention. We rely entirely on an engineered host cell, which is able to simulate a B cell response in vitro, and have now established the key components of the system, rapid self-selection and automated affinity maturation. If realized fully, this radically improved system would make the antibody generation available to academic researchers and smaller biotech companies, thus boosting life science research and catalyzing the initial antibody drug development process.
