Project description
Despite of all the political perturbations, Russia remains a highly attractive market for international companies. Yet, due to its unique historic, socio-cultural, economic and political background, the Russian business environment is very different from Western countries. As a result, it is very difficult and challenging for foreign companies and managers alike to comprehend and understand what works best in such an environment. The Russian organizational context is characterized by heavy reliance on personal networks, what is known as blat, the omnipresence of “the economy of favors” and, in many cases, corrupt and non-transparent practices. Navigating this highly-informal, relations-based and non-transparent environment is far from easy. Examining Western expatriates working in Russia, the project aims at uncovering some of the psychological mechanisms and personal strategies that can assist these expatriates in fitting better into their environments and social relations in Russia.
