Project description
The project examines the formation and development of enemy images in Russia from the Middle Ages to the revolution of 1917 using descriptions of conflicts as primary research material. The objective is to study how images of (myt)historical "hostile others" have been used in creation and recreation of the collective ideas of Rus'/Russia and Russianness, and in locating the realm geopolitically in space and time at each given time. The research aims to shed light not just on Russian developments, but on certain universal processes of enemy image formation and their relation to history politics and formation of shared identities.
