Artificial media such as photonic crystals and metamaterials possess properties which can not be achieved with conventional materials and they have radically changed the way electromagnetic waves can be manipulated. The concept of artificial and functional materials, however, is currently limited to the spatial domain as the approaches envisaged have considered only static variations of the refractive index. Combining the concept of structured light and metamaterials in the time-domain, LIGHTWAVE introduces a new paradigm and framework to create tunable and reconfigurable dynamic optical waveguides. Exploiting the space-time duality and the rich the dynamics that intense light can experience in the presence of a nonlinearity, LIGHTWAVE provide routes to designing and experimentally creating an entirely new class of dynamic media effectively acting as photonic crystals, temporal metamaterials or disordered media in the time-domain.
