Project description
European Union decision-makers and EU-level women's organizations increasinly represent gender equality as a contribution to economic growth and compatitiveness. At the same time, the EU's economic policies compromise gender equality. This interdisciplinary study describes the causes and processes of the shift from rights-based to economic arguments at EU-level and its effects for gender equality and feminists' ability to impact economic policies. Unlike most research on gender equality policy, the study complements feminist political theory with critical feminist study of economy. By discussing gendered and gendering processes of economization that shape gender policy and advocacy, the study provides a new, analytical way to conceptualize phenomena that are commonly discussed under the slippery term neoliberalism. The research material consists of the policy documents of EU institutions and women’s organizations and interviews of key EU-level gender equality actors.
