Project description
Freedom is central to our understanding of personhood and moral agency. Most people agree that we cannot be held responsible for actions that are not under our control, action that they could not have done. Theories of free will attempt to explicate the conditions under which we can be considered free and responsible. Given what we know from current neuroscience and biology, it seems that many of our actions have causes that are not in any sense under our control. Does this challenge our freedom? Christian theological anthropology has always maintained that human beings are indeed free and morally responsible. However, the exact nature of this freedom is the subject of fierce debate in contemporary theology. Some philosophical theologians have attempted to solve the challenge posed by the sciences. The project provides a critical analysis of those contemporary theological accounts of free will that take into account the sciences, especially neuroscience.
