Project description
Working memory, a temporary and capacity-limited memory storage, is one of the core mechanisms in our cognitive system. The precision of memory representation has been studied only with simple features and shapes. In the proposed research we investigate memory precision for complex and naturalistic stimuli, namely images of human faces. Memory precision for facial identities, expressions, and features will be behaviourally measured, and we investigate how naturalistic memory representations are built upon the perceptual features. In addition, the neural representations of faces will be studied using neuroimaging methods, and the role of memory precision in prosopagnosia (deficit in face recognition) will be tested. The proposed research provides novel findings on face memory and face representations. The results will benefit society by providing sensitive tests for cognitive abilities and declines, and by increasing our understanding of the causes of prosopagnosia.
