Project description
The general objective of my study is to identify epigenetic variants (DNA methylation and histone modifications) influencing the development of obesity, weight-loss and weight regain. To reveal these variants, I have built my research on the excellent longitudinal cohorts of the Finnish Twin Cohort Study, The Peri/postnatal Epigenetic Twins Study (PETS), and FINRISK. By understanding the biological pathways and mechanisms these epigenetic variants affect, it may be possible to target obesity-related diseases. This study is conducted at the Dept of Public Health, University of Helsinki, Finland, in collaboration with national and international obesity, twin research and epigenetics experts. My current research is built on my previous work: Ollikainen et al Hum Mol Genet 2010, Gordon et al Epigenetics 2011, Gordon et al Genome Res 2012, Martino et al Genome Biol 2013, Ollikainen et al Clin Epigenetics 2015, and Pietilšinen et al Int J Obes 2015). www.helsinki.fi/twinstudy/epitrain
