Project description
During the last decades, cardiovascular diseases have developed into a major burden in the western world, increasingly affecting millions. Cardiac hypertrophy is an adaptive response to myocardial infarction or increased blood pressure, and it often leads to heart failure. Understanding the underlying regulatory processes in the development of pathological hypertrophy and its progression to heart failure is needed for the development of effective therapies. My previous data suggest that endothelial cell - cardiomyocyte crosstalk is important for healthy heart growth and function. In this project I will study the effects of known risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, such as aging, obesity and physical inactivity on cardiac endothelial cells and their secreted proteins. I will identify factors, which are produced by endothelial cells and act on cardiomyocytes to find out new therapeutic targets for cardiometabolic diseases.
