Project description
Evidence for ecological impacts of global changes (e.g. nutrient enrichment, changed rainfall, climate warming) are abundant, yet there are very few generalities about which factors make natural communities either resistant (lack of change) or resilient (ability to recover) with respect to a changing conditions. The role of biotic modulators, especially, in generating resistance to global changes and impacting recovery from them, is poorly known. Plant functional traits, competition with neighboring plants and interactions with herbivores are biotic modulators that exhibit great potential to enhance biotic resistance to global changes and also impact plant community ability to recover from them. My research project aims to improve understanding of complex interactions among multiple biotic modulators and multiple global change factors. This knowledge will be crucial in predicting future ecosystem dynamics and function, and in planning conservation and restoration practices.
