Project description
This research deals with the nature of human language from the perspective of language typology, that is, by comparing the languages of the world to one another. I investigate to what extent common noun categories, such as case, definiteness, and number, may interact with one another and with other linguistic structures. This question is examined from the perspective of language complexity. The research material will be analyzed for about 400 languages, representing both spoken and sign languages. The material comes from descriptive works, from existing typological databases, and from a questionnaire on sign languages. The cognitive factors affecting the observed typological variation will also be reviewed from a theoretical viewpoint. The research produces knew knowledge especially about the diversity/unity of spoken and sign language and about the interactions of noun categories across languages. A major outcome of the project is a typological database which will be openly published.
