Project description
Pest insects and plant pathogens inflict great damage on agriculture and forestry. Especially movements of migrative pest insect and long-range transported plant pathogens are difficult to predict, but reliable model forecasts would help to prevent them timely at the right place. The purpose of this study is to develop a warning system for migrative pest insects and dispersion of plant pathogens. Such a pest insect is , for example, bird cherry aphid. Alternaria-spores can cause crop damage, but also allergic symptoms to humans. The model will be European wide, but the main focus is in Finland and the UK. Co-operation will be carried out with a number of Finnish and British actors. The Finnish Meteorological Institute and the University of Turku, Aerobiology Unit have already developed a similar model for pollen concentrations and dispersion. This project is a natural extension of the earlier model development.
