Project description
The project examines how technological and social innovation policies are applied to the delivery of humanitarian aid in the context of refugee crises in the Middle East. It argues that the impact of these policies needs to be assessed through qualitative analyses that focus on the spatial and material dimensions of humanitarian response, as these play a fundamental role in determining the outcome of aid interventions. Technological and social innovation are not merely new modalities through which universal and fixed humanitarian aims can be better achieved. Rather, they have the potential to profoundly reshape the relation between aid agencies and beneficiaries. These issues are explored through an ethnographic study of the work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) Innovation Office in refugee settlements in Jordan and Lebanon. Particular attention is paid to the use of information technologies and the promotion of refugee-led small businesses.
