Project description
The research project aims to analyze the forming and relevance of trust in elite relationships in Finland as well as the conditions under which Finnish elites seek public trust for their enactment of political processes in Finland. By examining specific case studies in an era of increasingly professional public relations (PR) and lobbying, it will be possible to draw conclusions about changes in Finlandís political culture. The hypothesis is that a move from a consensus seeking corporatist system towards a more competitive, conflictual political culture has occurred. Furthermore, the use of external political and media consultants has affected how legitimacy is sought through public as well as private elite relations of trust. The implications of these developments for the practices, structures and legitimation of power in a democratic society are potentially significant. Research methods include quantitative and qualitative content analysis of media and interview material.
