Project description
The goal of this project is to study how Franco- and Anglophone African diasporic literatures give articulation to the idea(l) of cosmopolitanism in Afroeuropean contexts that entail different forms of mobility. A selection of African diasporic literary texts have been analysed through a theoretical framework consisting of mobility studies, theories of cosmopolitanism, and postcolonial studies, and by applying a method of contextual close-reading that also pays attention to the texts' literary features. The central outcomes of the project include the arguments that 1) mobility studies is a theoretical framework that can be successfully applied to the study of African literatures; 2) that cosmopolitanism is not merely an identity position of the affluent "world citizens"; and that 3) practical cosmopolitanisms in the context of clandestine/underprivileged mobilities are less a matter of an active engagement than the result of the contextual restraints imposed on such mobilities.
