Project description
The objective of this research is to enhance the use of modern learning technology by teaching STEM subjects with smartphones and simultaneously to develop and investigate novel methodology and computational tools to analyze spoken conversations in real classrooms environments. We will investigate how the developed new methodology reveals e.g. to what extent different communicative approaches are present in science and math classroom discourses while students are investigating simulations, what types of questions do teachers use in a classroom discussion. Capturing the classroom speech content with the teacherís and studentsí smartphones and uploading it to a cloud allows parallel data processing for the automatic analysis of the teaching events. The project delivers a novel toolbox for scalable data collection and automatic tools for investigation of the spoken interaction in classroom contexts. Using simulations and learning in groups, students will learn the 21st century skills.
