The research aims at determining to what extent people can contribute to reduction of their energy carbon footprint through the choices
they make concerning energy usage in a situation where suitable tools are provided. To answer this question, variety of models is
created. Models describe functions of micro-grids, intelligent home automation, integration of small-scale renewable energy production,
energy storage, and heat distribution. Models are built so that the energy end-user is in the center with the ability to make decisions
concerning one’s own energy usage. With the bottom-up approach different scenarios regarding the density of population and type of
residence are created. Overall, the concept of parallel micro-grids and its possibilities and risks are assessed from technical, environmental, and societal aspects. Ultimately, the target is to recognize factors affecting the viability of a smart energy system and togive sustainable recommendations in development of it.
