Project description
The epidemic of allergic diseases and atopy has been worldwide, but the causal agents are still unknown. People who live on farms have less allergic diseases than the people in other living areas. Recently developed next generation sequencing method characterizes microbial exposure in depth; however, they generate huge data sets, which assign challenges for statistical analyses. This project describes microbial composition of house dust from farming and moisture damaged homes and their associations with development of allergic diseases at the age of 10.5 years. The project is expected to identify causal microbial exposures for both protective and predisposing effects for allergic diseases in two divergent environments. The project is held at THL. It includes research visit to Harvard University, which allows the transfer of latest methods to analyse sequencing data in epidemiological studies, which is urgently needed in the Finnish research environment.
