Project description
Infertility affects about 7% of all reproductive-age men. Genetic factors can be identified in about 15% of cases; however, the etiology is still unknown in about 50% of these cases. Despite the growing amount of genes attributed to male infertility, there is an increasing need to identify and characterize novel ones. The aim of this study is to analyze novel testis-specific genes and their functions in vivo by employing new CRISPR/Cas genetic modification technology. My research will focus on detailed characterization of the genes that cause severe male infertility phenotypes. This research will provide detailed analysis of unique previously uncharacterized testis-specific genes. It will enable the diagnosis of clinical conditions in which the analyzed genes are disrupted. My research results could be applicable to the development and improvement of clinical assisted reproduction techniques. Importantly, the data of this research could be utilized to develop novel male contraceptives.
