Project description
Chronic psychosocial stress is a well-established risk factor for anxiety disorders, but the development of targets for therapeutic intervention is limited by ignorance of the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms. The goal of this project was to establish which biological pathways in the bed nucleus of stria terminalis, a brain region critical for the regulation of stress and anxiety, affect stress-induced anxiety. For this purpose we employed modern genomic, proteomic, and bioinformatic methods in a well-established experimental model of chronic psychosocial stress. Our integrative analyses showed that myelin plasticity and mitochondrial function and morphology are major responses to chronic psychosocial stress. Our findings provide a foundation for the identification of specific genetic regulators of chronic stress-induced myelin plasticity and mitochondrial function.
