Project description
This research concentrates on the function of intermediate filament protein vimentin in wound healing, inflammation and cancer. The earlier findings of our study suggest that vimentin participates the transition of epithelial cancer cells into fibroblasts promoting cell migration. In addition, a slow recovery of skin wounds, a persistent chronic inflammation and an increased cancer have been observed in vimentin knockout mice. By using multiple techniques, the aim of this project is to get new information how vimentin and its cooperating molecules function in the established mouse models and how they are involved in different physiological and pathological processes. This project will lead to identification of not only clinical prognostic and diagnostic tools, but also attractive therapeutic targets against chronic wounds, organ fibrosis and malignant cancer.
