Project description
My project is dedicated to a protein called myosin 1C (Myo1C). Various myosins have always been though to only participate in transport processes in the cellular cytoplasm. Myo1C, however, was found in the cell nucleus and plays several important functions there. We have recently found that Myo1C might be involved in maintenance of the correct nuclear structure. Studying these processes is important for understanding of how, for example, normal cells turn into cancerous. In this project I will be working with living cells as well as purified proteins, trying to understand how they interact with each other and what is the role of Myo1C in these processes. The project will be conducted at the Institute of Biotechnology which is one of Finlandís leading centres for life science research. I hope my research will enrich our understanding of cell functioning and give some ideas of how cells safeguard the genome.
