Project description
The project focuses on carbon economy and biomass partitioning between the autotrophic host and heterotrophic fungal symbiont, but it applies also to the level of fungal community structure analyzed with high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatic methods. We will conduct a series of experiments with manipulation of light spectrum and air temperature to create southern climate conditions in the north. We will use boreal tree species possessing either free (Betula pendula) or fixed (Pinus sylvestris) growth pattern from southern and northern provenances, assumed to have different abilities to adapt to northern light climate. Growth of the hosts and their ECM symbionts will also be modelled in different light scenarios. As a result, novel information on host-symbiont relationships and cost efficiency of ECM fungal symbiosis to forest trees will be produced.
