Project description
Photosynthetic electron transport in the thylakoid membrane is regulated to maintain the right balance of electrons and energy in the stroma. Imbalances caused by changes in environmental conditions are rapidly signalled to the thylakoid lumen through changes in pH, which activates several lumenal proteins to make corrective adjustments to the photosynthetic machinery. Lumen pH is therefore an important mechanism for coordinating stromal and lumenal processes, and yet the impacts of environmental fluctuations, metabolites and lumen pH on the thylakoid proteome have not been investigated. This project will characterise the thylakoid lumen proteome and its translocation pathways to identify new mechanisms controlling photosynthetic adaptations to the natural environment.
