Project description
Greenhouse gas exchange between forest ecosystems and atmosphere is one of the key issues affecting the global climate. This study increases the reliability of the forest carbon balance by examining the weakly known primary production of ground vegetation and its allocation; Is the majority of the bind carbon fast released back into the atmosphere or is it locked in long-lived plant parts? How do the species, age, origin and growth environment affect the production and its allocation? In addition to laboratory experiments, I will measure in pine forests from Belgium to northern Finland. Results are used to e.g. estimate the carbon balance of the ground vegetation in Finland and in the possibly changing climate. Furthermore, the study offers a tool to divide the automatic net exchange measurements at the forest floor into different components. The tool enables the novel use of the widely measured net exchange measuring material in greenhouse gas exchange community.
