This project aimed at the utilization of electric energy for the conversion of CO2 into useful organic compounds. This conversion may be achieved through enzymatic electrosynthesis that is, however, currently limited by the poor understanding of the biomolecular basis of the reaction, the low stability of the electrode-bound enzymes and the requirement for externally added enzyme cofactors. In order to address these aspects, a collaboration with the research group of Prof. Alfred Spormann at the Stanford University was established where an electrosynthetic enzyme complex was characterized. Its composition was determined and it was found to catalyse CO2 reduction to formate for up to five days in the absence of externally added cofactors. These findings motivate further research that will improve the understanding of the involved electron transfer processes and support the bioeconomy advancement through novel ways to utilize carbon dioxide as a chemical feedstock.
