Project description
Aortic-valve stenosis is common in elderly persons, with a prevalence of 2 to 4% in the population over 65 years of age. Calcific aortic valve disease is a slowly progressive disorder that ranges from mild valve thickening without obstruction of blood flow, termed aortic sclerosis, to severe calcification with impaired leaflet motion, or aortic stenosis. Aortic valve calcification is an actively regulated and cell-mediated process, but signaling pathways mediating calcification process in aortic valves are not known. The proposed studies will identify and characterize several novel factors involved in aortic stenosis providing new insights into the pathogenesis of this complex disease.
