An effective immune system is vital for organisms to survive in an environment full of pathogens. Since many mammalian signaling pathways and genes have their homologs in Drosophila melanogaster, this small and relatively simple organism is a good model for studying mechanisms of innate immunity. The aim of the project was to study the role of forkhead transcription factors in cellular immunity, especially in immune cell differentiation. During the project, we developed a flow cytometry based method for studying blood cell populations in Drosophila. We found that the forkhead factor foxo is important for an immune response against parasitoid wasps, and it functions at least in specialized immune cells, the lamellocytes. Sequencing the hemocyte RNA revealed genes, whose regulation involves foxo in healthy animals, and genes regulated specially during the immune response. The project resulted in several research questions for future research involving function of the forkhead factors.
